When accessing private medical cannabis treatment, patients will need to fund both consultation and medication costs.

Consultation

Consultation costs vary between clinics, as outlined in our clinic directory.

At the start of treatment medication may be slowly increased, whilst the most effective product and dosage are identified. Initially patients may require monthly follow-up appointments to discuss how they are getting on with their medication. Once the doctor is happy that the patient has stabilised on their medication, follow-up appointments may only be required every 3 months.

Some clinics may charge a fee to write a repeat prescription between appointments; these costs are also outlined in our clinic directory.

Medication

As medicinal cannabis is a personalised treatment, the cost can vary significantly based on product, dose and whether the medication is subsidised under an access scheme.

Discussing cost with your doctor and letting them know what your budget is will help you to identify which products are an option for you.

The cost of flower starts at £5 per gram, which is usually prescribed in 10g to 30g bags. The cost of oil starts at £30 for a 10ml bottle.

When starting medical cannabis treatment patients are usually prescribed a very low dose - typically less than 0.1g of flower or 0.1ml of oil per dose. The dose is increased slowly until symptom relief is obtained. This ‘low and slow’ approach helps avoid unwanted side effects.

A rough guide to the cost of different products can be found on the Cannapedia website.
